Arriva Trains Wales (leased from Angel Trains) Alstom class 175/1 ‘Coradia 1000’ three car diesel-hydraulic multiple unit number 175111 of CH passes Llanfair,p,g signal box forming the 10:33( Daily) Holyhead to Cardiff Central (1V33). Monday 10th January 2011
Llanfairpwllgwngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch signal box is located alongside the Up Main line by Station Road level crossing and is a London and North Western Railway design perculiar to the Chester and Holyhead Division in the early 1870s. Although the signal box carries a London Midland and Scottish Railway post-1935 nameboard showing the name as Llanfair,p,g, the signal box was named Llanfair in the sectional appendices from the early 1930s until the start of the 21st century. Originally the level crossing gates were hand operated but a gate wheel was installed in 1893 along with a replacement 18 lever London and North Western Railway Tumbler lever frame. To accomodate the new equipment it was necessary to move the door to the rear of the signal box. The box was reduced to a non block post controlling the adjacent level crossing only on 2nd December 1973 when the tokenless block section between Llanfair,p,g and Menai Bridge signal boxes was replaced by an absolute block section between Bangor and Gaerwen signal boxes (Menai Bridge signal box was closed on the same day). The gate wheel was removed and the level crossing gates converted to hand operation in 1974 when the lever frame was reduced to 4 levers to release/lock the wickets and gates, with emergency replacement switches provided on Bangor signal box 11 and 59 signals. The original 3x2 operating floor windows were replaced in the summer of 2000
BR59 signal is a restricted height three aspect colour light signal offset to the right of the tubular post to allow sighting beneath the footbridge at Llanfairpwllgwngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch station
#5 Bucyrus Model 1 Spreader
Some recent shots of this beast back in service on the MNNR jogged my memory to when this old spreader was seen heading off the Wisconsin & Michigan line (leased from WC in the early 1990s).
The price of scrap steel must have been low in those days since Mr. Burrows amassed a range of equipment far overshadowing the actual needs of his 33 mile shortline. This was just one of many items that was hauled in, sat in disrepair outside Ironwood, and then shipped out when operations ended. Much of this stuff ended up stored at the Twin Cities Aresenal site in Arden Hills, MN. It was eventually dispersed from there some of it ending up on the Minnesota Commercial (which served the Arsenal trackage). I believe the pieces went to the Commercial in trade for the moving/storage fees of the equipment.
The commercial spruced up the 100 year old spreader with new windows and an additional set of ditch-style lights on the roof. The unit could still use a fresh coat of paint. It was brought out this month to clean up the snow build up from between the rails on Minnesota Commercial routes. Under the care of the MNNR the old Bucyrus spreader should see many more years of service.
The #5 was coupled up to an Alco RS3 of Oliver Iron Mining Co. (MN) heritage bearing the same style of painted on numbering. It is a pretty safe guess this spreader spent the better part of it's life at the Oliver too. For a couple reasons beyond the numbering style this is likely an Oliver unit, Bucyrus would have been a very familiar name to a mining company and a heavy low design appears to be more suited to ditching & clearing boulders off pit tracks then busting snow drifts on a common carrier railroad.
